What is Barbershop?
Barbershop harmony is a style of unaccompanied vocal music characterized by consonant four-part chords for every melody note in a predominantly homo-phonic texture. The melody is consistently sung by the lead, with the tenor harmonizing above the melody, the bass singing the lowest harmonizing notes, and the baritone completing the chord. You do not have to understand the technical aspects to know that it is fun for men to enjoy the fellowship and the creation of music together. We provide all the tools for you to meet that goal; the ability to read sheet music is not required. If you are a youth/man who would like to sing with a chorus that is committed to singing excellence, we welcome you.
Barbershop music features songs with understandable lyrics and easily singable melodies whose tones clearly define a tonal centre and imply major and minor chords and Barbershop (dominant and secondary dominant) seventh chords that resolve primarily around the circle of fifths, while making frequent use of other resolutions. Barbershop music also features a balanced and symmetrical form, and a standard meter.
If you like to sing, we invite you to visit the Winnipeg Golden Chordsmen Chorus on a Wednesday evening. Sitting in on one of our rehearsals is the perfect way to find out more about us, and what we can do for you! You’ll have the opportunity to hear us perform four-part, acappella harmony, and you’ll be invited to join us on the risers to experience the music, friendship and fun for which our chorus is known!
About the Winnipeg Golden Chordsmen Chorus
AFFILIATION – Winnipeg Golden Chordsmen Chorus is a chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society (SPEBSQSA), a non-profit organization of approximately 30,000 members in choruses and quartets, worldwide. The headquarters is in Nashville, Tennessee.
PERFORMANCE – The main purpose of Winnipeg Golden Chordsmen Chorus is to get out and sing for our community. We sing at annual shows, a number of community events, and at annual competitions.
EDUCATION – In addition to sharing our music with others, another great passion of ours is learning more about the art of acappella singing. Vocal instruction is a regular part of chorus rehearsals, and a very important component of the chorus experience. A couple of times a year, we will get coaching from a visiting master in the art of barbershop, where we learn many fabulous tricks of the trade.
COMPETITION – In the spring of every year, Winnipeg Golden Chordsmen Chorus usually participate in the Northern Plains Division chorus competition. Competitions are a special time for quartets and choruses from our Division and District to come together to sing for each other, and get some constructive feedback from a panel of judges. The Division chorus and quartet winners are qualified to compete in the Land O’ Lakes District competition in the Fall to possibly qualify for the International Competition, which is held in the summer in a city selected each year.
QUARTETS – Most choruses have a number of members who form their own vocal quartets in addition to singing with the chorus. The Golden Chordsmen currently has four quartets, and we are very proud of them! Go to our CHAPTER QUARTETS page to learn more about our quartets.
